Shifting the Eco Footprint takes a lot of time and effort, and although getting to know your neighbourhood and inspiring everyone to embrace a sustainable lifestyle are rewarding in their own ways, having more differences between all three states would have been welcome. It's just a shame that the benefits of a Green Eco Footprint, or the downsides of an Industrial one, don't make a significant impact on gameplay and are largely cosmetic. Dumpster diving is one way to find scraps to recycle, with Sims also able to dive for meals, ingredients, and deals. Meanwhile, a new fabrication skill that lets you create furniture and other items (interestingly not available in Build mode without using cheats) out of recycled bits and pieces. There's a decent wealth of smaller additions that help to bring out the theme of the pack, including eco-related traits, insect farms, and 'cruelty-free' meat. Plus, new apartments have been added for the first time since 2016's City Living, with Grims Quarry and Conifer Station having two each. In addition to the industrial-looking Port Promise, there's a suburb next to a rock quarry and a neighbourhood by a defunct train station, both of which – like Port Promise – can be spruced up through modern development and green initiatives. ![]() The world of Evergreen Harbor is a standout as well. Community spaces can be converted into a marketplace, a community garden, or a maker space, providing multiple reasons for Sims to gather. This is enhanced by the community spaces, public lots where you can often find large groups of residents hanging out. ![]() It's a satisfying loop – there are tangible benefits to befriending other people, which feeds right back into the neighbourhood. Or how Sims can take part-time jobs as a lifeguard or diving instructor to make ends meet.Votes are dictated through the amount of influence you have, and one of the best ways to earn influence points (aside from the Civil Designer career) is to get to know and become friends with your fellow Sims. Or how the people love a good kava party. And there is plenty that this review hasn't even touched on, like how (with the Seasons expansion) Sulani is prone to monsoon weather. Ultimately, that's only a minor knock against the expansion pack when considering everything that Island Living gets right. ![]() However, that novelty is soon lost and mermaids don't feel meaningful enough from a gameplay or storytelling perspective to make a lasting impact, particularly when compared to the brilliant vampires. The first time playing with a mermaid is novel, with specific powers (at the cost of hydration) allowing you to perform actions such as entrancing other Sims into the water like a siren and – if you have the Seasons expansion – change the weather. Hydration is replenished by doing tasks like swimming in the ocean and taking a shower. We've seen glimpses of this in a couple of previous expansions, such as the diverse, metropolitan world of San Myshuno in City Living and the European-inspired Windenburg in Get Together, but developer Maxis outdid themselves here.Ī mermaid has the same needs as a normal Sim, except for the 'hygiene' meter being replaced with 'hydration'. There are points of interest in the world worth exploring as well – for instance, a gorgeous waterfall which Sims like to shower and play in (it's also a romantic spot for marriage proposals) and an active volcano that spews out hazardous lava bombs from time to time.īut what's most impressive about Sulani is how it evokes a real sense of place in a way that no other world has really done before. But with the amount of things your Sims can do outside, whether it's on the sandy beaches or the vast water, Sulani is the closest the game has come to replicating that open-world feeling. To this day, one of the most common criticisms about The Sims 4 is the lack of 'open world'. This also has a wonderful side effect of making the three neighbourhoods feel more expansive.
